  • A parasol, awning, or other device giving protection from the sun

  • awning: a canopy made of canvas to shelter people or things from rain or sun

  • parasol: a handheld collapsible source of shade

  • A space sunshade or sunshield can be described as analogous to a parasol that s or otherwise reduces some of a star's rays, preventing them from hitting a planet and thereby reducing its insolation, which results in less heating of the planet.

  • A T-top is a type of top for center console boats that is built with a "T" shaped structure when viewed from the side. The top is tall enough to stand under, and provides shade and rain protection for 2 or more passengers at the boat's helm.

  • A car roof with removable panels

  • Short, aluminum tower with overhead canvas to protect the helm.

  • An automotive T-top is an automobile roof with removable panels on either side of a rigid bar running from the center of one structural bar between pillars to the center of the next structural bar, the panels of a traditional T-top are usually made of auto grade safety glass.

Amphitheatre at Isca Silurum

Amphitheatre at Isca Silurum

The legionary fortress at Isca Silurum (modern Caerleon on Usk) was equipped with all modern amenities by around AD 90 when this amphitheatre was built. The oval arena measures 56 x 41 metres and is surrounded by the earth banks, retained by masonry, that supported the lower teirs of seating. The higher teirs rose up on a timber superstructure. Maximum capacity was around 6,000.

The amphitheatre is placed outside the ramparts of the fortress - so this clearly wasn't altogether bandit country.

The main processional entrance and exit are shown here. Also visible in this shot are four of the six pedestrian entrances that gave access to the seating area.

Well-preserved amphitheatres in southern Europe (some still in use to this day) show evidence of retractable sunshades to keep the crowd cool. I can't help speculating that - this being Wales - this one must have had a retractable rain cover.

Isca was apparently also known as Isca Augusta or Isca Legionis, after the II "Augusta" legion which made its base here. The modern name Caerleon comes from the Latin Castra Legionis. Castra is simply translated into the Welsh Caer, "city." In English by contrast, the Latin word was borrowed as ceastre, meaning walled city, which survives as "-chester" or "-cester" in many former Roman place names today.

The venue continued to be used and repaired until the 3rd century AD, when the legion moved on and the fortress itself was dismantled. It must have been turmoil in a garrison town, suddenly to be without a garrison.

From the top of the bank I got a vivid recall of the gladiator fight in the amphitheatre scene in "Eagle of the Ninth" (Rosemary Sutcliff) - which was set in Calleva Atrebatum, Silchester in modern England. That was before I saw the film.
